Torretta Al Bagno - Capraia Island

Toscana - Capraia Island

The legend tells that when, Venus borned from Tyrrhenian Sea, she broked her necklace and she loosed some perls that became Tuscan islands.

The Archipelago counts of 7 major island that from 1996 are part of a National Park. They are Gorgona, Capraia, Elba – the biggest one, Pianosa, Giglio, Giannutri and Montecristo – famous for the renowned fiction of A.Dumas “The Count of Monte Cristo”.

Every  island is very different from each the others because of nature, geology, history and traditions.

For size, Capraia is the third one with a dimension of about 20 Kmq. East coast slops gentle, West coast is high and unapprochable.

From 1873 to 1986 a Penal Colony with agricolture purpose was located in the North of Capraia. This causes an almost total preservation of the environment of all the island that today is still looking wild and unpolluted, covered with Mediterranean flora with marvellous colors and scent – specially in April and May whit the blooming plants.

This place is a real hikers, trekkers and divers paradise infact Capraia has no streets, except for a 800 meters from the port to the castle of the main village. The marvellous places on the hill or along the coasts are only reachable by walk or by boat.

Capraia is also the only island of the Tuscan Archipelago entirely born by volcanic eruptions:.the first 9.5 millions of years ago and a second one 4.5 millions of years ago. For this reason it’s also a unique place for geological aspect.
